Our Story


Robert F. Adams ASLA, a Santa Barbara landscape architect and a visual artist, is the founder of Earthknower Studios, a landscape architectural and environmental planning firm that focuses on artistic sustainable design for institutional, commercial, and residential clients. He is a graduate of UCLA's School of Theatre and Film and the Landscape Architecture program at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Robert's professional expertise includes public art and urban design. He has also chaired or has served on the City of Santa Barbara’s Arts Advisory Committee for over twelve years.

Clients include the City of Santa Barbara, the Braille Institute, the Aspen Institute, Atlas Metals, and other recycling entities, the Santa Barbara Airport, Montecito Bank and Trust, the Beachwalk condominiums in Carpinteria, the Park House in Las Vegas Starbucks, Blue Creek Ranch and the Tree Farm near Aspen, and private homeowners and shopping center developers. The regional reach of his projects extends from the Central Coast of California, Pasadena, Los Angeles, the desert areas of California, and even into the Las Vegas area.

Robert has received recognition from a variety of non-profits, including Santa Barbara Beautiful and the Architectural Foundation. Being a key community volunteer, he has been part of public art development efforts. He has also served on the Historic Landmarks Commission and many ad-hoc efforts to improve the artistic and environmental vitality of communities.

Robert currently writes a cultural column about film and opera for a local magazine (Voicesb.com) and is involved with Opera Santa Barbara. Some of his additional cultural activities include writing, as well as being part of film selection committees for both the Aspen and Santa Barbara International Film Festivals. As a practicing artist, Robert’s work has been shown at the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Architectural Foundation Gallery.
